Monday Motivation

It’s that time again people, it’s Monday. That means a new beginning and a new chance to be awesome! And this week I plan to do exactly that! This week is all about thinking big(ger) and helping others.

Last week I talked about how we all needed to get rid of the “give no fucks” attitude and actually start giving a damn. I have decided that since the holidays are coming up and I have more than enough to be grateful for I need to do what I can for someone who needs it. Me and my Ol’ Lady are thinking instead of receiving any gifts from our friends and family we are asking them to donate to a charity in our names, and we will do the same in return.

I want to keep the charities we pick local and so far I am considering both The Colorado AIDS Project and StandUP for Kids. I chose them because my girlfriend lost a close family member to AIDS when she was young and I was practically a homeless youth myself at one point. I wish I had more money to give to more charities but I can only choose two. Besides the fact that we have personal reasons to choose these charities, I also believe these are the people who need the most help during the holidays.

We are also thinking about volunteering too. Giving money is easy, when you have it, but giving your time is a real commitment. Hell, I’m even thinking about doing this every month! And I plan to do my damnedest to get friends and family donating and volunteering too. As bad as we all think things are for us, there is always a little something we can do for someone less fortunate, right?

This week I also plan to do a lot more of this writing thing. I am currently reading On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King. It’s equal parts memoir and how-to on writing and so far it’s fascinating! I’m only half way through and I’ve already learned so much. I wish I had more free time to digest the information but I think I’ll read it at least one or two more times and do my best to implement all the tips given.

I’m also scouting for more books about writing, so if you have any suggestions leave them in the comments please.

I think I might work on writing a few pieces for some smaller publications too. I see a lot of calls of submissions on Tumblr and Google+ all the time and I’m interested in contributing. Most of them are little zines but I love zines and would be thrilled to contribute! And even though it’s unpaid I do like the idea of getting to see my words printed. The goal being nothing but motivation and feedback.

And it just plain sounds like fun!

Other than that not much else is going on. I still have some Christmas shopping to do for the kids in my family and I am beginning to panic a bit that Christmas is next week but a few trips to Target after work should get ‘er done. They’re just kids, shouldn’t be too difficult, right? I’ve also got to plan a Christmas dinner for two for me and my girlfriend. Now that sounds difficult!

I hope you all have a great week, and I wish you the best of luck in coming up with and executing your own holiday plans :)
