This is my first year participating in the Blogging A to Z Challenge and to say I am nervous would be a gross understatement. I am terrified! I am having to learn about all of this in a short amount of time and I am still trying to get a handle on it. The first step was to come up with a theme and even that proved to be more difficult than I thought it would be.
I considered several, everything from clichés to paradoxes to cognitive science (God I am such a nerd) but I couldn’t get topics for each letter of the alphabet for any of those ones. I did realize that I wanted to go with a science theme considering I haven’t gotten nearly as nerdy on this blog as I had wanted to. Then it hit me, Astronomy Day falls on April 25th this year, what better way to celebrate then to devote a whole month to writing about the the science of the universe??
So that was it, the theme this month is Astronomy!
I will write about a new aspect, or term, or concept of Astronomy everyday and feature a beautiful “Astronomy Photo of the Day” from NASA complete with an explanation. I may even write about more than one thing a day simply because I cannot settle on one thing for each letter. There is so much to cover guys!
I have always been interested in the science of the celestial objects. I remember being a young teenager trying to describe the way gravity works to my younger sister. I had learned about it while watching some PBS special that I can’t remember now and I felt so excited. She either didn’t get it or she didn’t care but I had fallen in love with the universe.
I remember seeing images of the rings of Saturn and learning about Jupiter’s Great Red Spot. I remember seeing my first Solar eclipse and learning about the star Rigel and Betelgeuse in the constellation Orion, then deciding the Orion was my favorite constellation. Astronomy also lead me towards Atheism, I could not understand why a God who had created such beautiful objects failed to mention them at all in The Bible.
I look forward to teaching you all about the things I find interesting and maybe learning a few things myself. In the mean time I’ll leave you with one of my favorites comics that illustrates my motivation:
