If We Were Having Coffee – Winter Came Back, My Dog is Better, and I’m Reading More

If we were having coffee I would tell you that the weather this past week has been horrid! It has been cloudy and gloomy and quite depressing outside. The rain has come on and off and the whole city feels soggy and the humidity is stifling. I know it isn’t as bad as places where it rain much more often but Denver, CO is a semi-arid climate, I am used to sunshine and dry air. When we have all of this moisture my mood gets weird.

To top it all off it began snowing last night. Yes, snow, in May! And it wasn’t just a little snow, no, we got 8 inches of the slushy heavy stuff. Tree branches are down all over the place. I think we are lucky the power is even on. Tomorrow it’s supposed to get better though so I’ll try to perk up.

If we were having coffee I would tell you that Lola, my new puppy is doing very well! She has gotten through all of her meds and has gained weight and grown taller since we got her. Since she’s been better her personality has been able to come through and we have learned that little Lola is very, very stubborn! She’s generally a good dog but she is only good if she wants to be, not because I ask her to be.

Having a dog again is nice, but having Lola has made us miss our other dogs even more. She reminds us of them both. She is serious and dignified like Angel, our Husky/German Shepard mix, but also has the energy and clumsiness of Samson, our terrier mix. Angel had to be put down because of arthritis and Samson passed after surgery to remove an object he’d swallowed from his throat. We were devastated over both.

Lol being sick also reminded us of those events and I was worried we wouldn’t be able to handle it. Thank God she didn’t have parvo and got better.

If we were having coffee I would tell you about some of the reading material I have picked up recently.

I have The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Writing Nonfiction which I am hoping will help with my blogging skills and writing a few essays for the zine I want to put together. I also picked up a couple of issues of the Black Warrior Review which I’d one day like to submit to. They have a $1000 writing contest going on right now if you’re interested in that sort of thing. And I got the new issue of my new favorite magazine New Philosopher which also has it’s own quarterly writing contest. I also got a few graphic novels, Saga and American Vampire.

I’ve been doing my best to read more often and I have noticed that reading magazines and graphic novels helps. I want t read real books but just don’t have the time. I don’t want to be too hard on myself for not reading at all though so this is a sort of compromise with myself. I get the same mental stimulation in a smaller, easier to digest package. When things die down around here I’ll try to read some books again.

If we were having coffee I would wish all of my readers who are moms a very Happy Mother’s Day. Being a mother is hard work and you deserve a day to celebrate all that you do. I hope you all your day was filled with love and joy and I hope your gifts weren’t too cheesy.

If we were having coffee I would say I had better go now. I hate to leave but I have so much to do around the house and I have to prepare myself (emotionally) to go back to work tomorrow. I hope you had a good weekend and thank you for stopping by :)
