The Week’s End // A Round-up of All Sorts of Interesting Stuff

Happy Saturday everyone! If you’re looking for some interesting reads to check out while you kick back and relax, or maybe before you go do something fun and exciting, look no further, I’ve got you covered! Every weekend I like to share with you the most interesting things I found across the great, wide web. Enjoy!

Hurricane Patricia Loses Power as Mexico Assesses Damage // The New York Times

As it slammed into the coast, the storm was still firmly within the Category 5 range, with winds topping 165 m.p.h., strong enough to lift cars from the street, tear the roofs off house and pull trees up from their roots.

If you hadn’t heard yet, the strongest storm in human recorded history, Hurricane Patricia, hit Mexico yesterday. My heart goes out to everyone affected by the likely catastrophic damage. My thoughts are on the future though, where storms like this may become more and more common thanks to humans fucking up the climate.

50 Great Books About Deliciously Bad Women // Flavorwire

What is it about bad girls that is so alluring? Maybe it’s the seized power they signify, or the agency their badness implies, or just the comebacks and leather jackets, but I always love the “bad” women in literature best

If you, like me, are looking for something new to read, check out this list of bad girls in literature. I’ll be adding a few of these to my TBR list :)

How Three Survivors of Suicide Spent Their Last Days On Earth // Upvoted

“I remember that at that final moment, I didn’t want to die.”

Honest, shocking, and heartbreaking stores of people who have attempted suicide and failed. These people are often silenced die to the taboo of suicide but it’s important we listen to them. It could easily be any of us that ends up like this and the survivors are the key to finding the way back.

You used to call me on ma cell-you-lar-de-vice at-night

I’ve long been a fan of Ms. Badu and I am in love with her cover of Drake’s summer hit, Hotline Bling. I really like how it starts off as a direct copy of an almost direct copy of the original and slowly morphs into something entirely in her style. It’s definitely different though and if you aren’t partial to Badu’s style you might not like it. Listen with an open mind.

P.S. Looks like she has a mixtape in the works too!

Rant: My life is not like the movies // Taylor Grace

Reality never seems to intrude into the movies.

There’s been many times I’ve watched a movie and wished the would show the less pleasant aspects of life, especially in romantic films. What happens when the girl period starts while on a date and she doesn’t have a tampon? Or maybe the guy ate a bad burrito for lunch and his stomach grumbles loudly right before their first kiss?

The Force Awakens Official Trailer // Star Wars

Watch the official trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, coming to theaters December 18, 2015.

Oh my God this is going to be so good! I CANNOT WAIT!

A girl needs her dad. // Fearfully and Wonderfully Mandy

Any man can make a child, but it takes a special kind of man to be a dad.

A beautiful story about a man who made a child and a man who raised one. I’ve always said that being related to someone by blood does not make them family. Family is who loves you. Family doesn’t have to demand love. Family is who you give your love to freely.

Stanley Kubrick’s THE SHINING: The Fear Of The Inevitable // Birth. Movies. Death.

The Shining is always going to be one of those films that we don’t quite figure out.

The Shining is, and will forever be, one of my very favorite films. I like the film for what it is, a story about a haunted hotel driving it’s caretaker to kill his own family. I haven’t paid much attention to some of the weirder mysteries in the movie but the last time I saw it I really took note of that old picture of Jack Torrence in the end. It really made me wonder about how time flows in this movie and how Jack is connected to the hotels history.

I’m Tired of Being a Christian // Kelsey L. Munger

I’m tired of being a Christian if it means damning love to Hell.

I love it when Christians wake up and see what their religion is becoming, and what it has done to the world. Bravo! As an Atheist I’m often accused of wanting people to stop believing in God and that just isn’t true. What I want is for people to be aware of the ways their beliefs negatively impact other people and why that is wrong.

Scientists agree: Coffee naps are better than coffee or naps alone // Vox

Is your napping technique backed up by scientific research? This one is.

Coffee and naps are two of my favorite things that I have just learned go great together. Life is beautiful :)

And that’s it for this week. Have you read, watched, heard, or written an interesting thing this week? If so, share with the class by leaving a link in the comments :)

  1. Great round up. The coffee/nap thing I’ve tried and it works! I feel fantastic when I wake up. I’m also loving your bad women book link. I’ll be reading up on these titles and added some to my Goodreads. Thanks!
