As I mentioned in my New Year’s resolution post yesterday, this month I will be doing a 30-day minimalism challenge to get a fresh start and practice mindfulness, solitude, and simplicity. Minimalism and Zen go hand in hand. Minimalism is about not making life too cluttered, nor too busy. Minimalism is about not being wasteful. It’s about figuring out what true happiness is, not what advertising tells you it is. Anything that is unnecessary is wasteful, and in a world where the trash is piling up and none of us is any better for it, maybe it’s time to try a new way.
I’m starting with doing 30 days, just to give it a try. What I like, I’ll keep, what I don’t, I’ll toss.
Stay offline for one day
Social media, endless news streams and articles all drain our energy and keep us in a constant distracted state. So today: Log off and enjoy the calmness of staying disconnected.
Today’s challenge is to stay offline. I actually wrote this post yesterday and scheduled it for this morning. I am never very good at doing things ahead of time but in addition to this challenge, I am also working on staying focused and doing a little more to get ahead every day. It was nice to be able to combine those two goals.
So what am I doing instead of endlessly scrolling my various and timelines? Today I’m working on a homemade gift for my girlfriend, reading The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Du Bois, working on my planner and journaling, and getting a head start on some the weekend cleaning. Nothing exciting, but it will be nice to have to time to clear my mind on the first day of the New Year. It feels right to start it off slowly and calmly.
Welp, I hope you all had a fun, and safe, night. If you were out partying I wish you a swift recovery this morning. I hope the first day of 2016 is kind to you and you get the chance to start the year off right.
