The Week’s End // All Sorts of Interesting Stuff

Happy Saturday everyone! If you’re looking for some interesting reads to check out while you kick back and relax, look no further, I’ve got you covered! Every weekend I like to share with you the most interesting things I found across the great, wide web. Enjoy!

What Went Wrong In Flint // FiveThirtyEight

Officials at the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the agency in charge of making sure water is safe in the state, made a series of decisions that had disastrous consequences

If you’ve been living under a rock these past couple of weeks and haven’t heard, the people of Flint, Michigan were poisoned in an attempt by the state officials to save money. The irony is, in the end, this disaster will cost them so much more than they hoped to save. The question now is, who will be held responsible?

If the FiveThirtyEight article is too much, here is a 3-minute explanation from Vox:

Challenger: The Science of a Space Shuttle Disaster // TIME

It’s been 30 years since that awful morning on Jan. 28, 1986, and an entire generation of Americans has been born and grown into young adulthood since.

I never knew much about the Challenger disaster, I wasn’t even a year old when it happened. This year I took notice though and learned quite a bit. Watching the video was an emotional experience and I can imagine how the whole country grieved when it happened all those years ago.

Open Syllabus Explorer // via Austin Kleon

The OSP is an effort to make the intellectual judgment embedded in syllabi relevant to broader explorations of teaching, publishing, and intellectual history.

Explore the texts most assigned books in a variety of courses. Useful for teachers and students, sure, but for those of us who just love reading and learning this is a great source for “must-reads” on any subject.

20 Things All Book Lovers Wish Someone Would Say to Them // Goodreads

“Sure, I understand you need the rest of the day off to mourn the loss of a beloved character.”

A fun list of all the things we wish we could hear. What would you add?

Wisdom // The School of Life

Philosophy means, in Ancient Greek, the love of wisdom. But the word wisdom can sound very big and forbidding; what does it really mean to be wise?

Wisdom is a word I don’t feel is used often enough. It is more than knowledge, it is the pursuit of knowledge coupled with the insight to act with great judgement in any circumstance. We should all make it our life’s goal to pursue what was once considered a great virtue.

Life Without Power Steering or How a Muslim Family Parks by Sam Pierstorff // The Normal School

My mother never just pulled up and let us run out of the car. She had her list of demands—du’as to be heard, prayers to be read, reminders to recite Al-Fatiha, the Quran’s opening chapter, before every math test.

It is amazing how everyday activities can be so different from family to family in a country where so many cultures live side by side. Here is a glimpse into one.

kissing girls by callie hensler // The Rising Phoenix Review

the first time I kissed a girl,
she pressed me up against a tree
and something in my heart sprouted.

Growing up queer isn’t easy but the girls we kiss in those first years of figuring out who we are, stay with us for life.

Creative Pep Talk Episode 071 – Hard Work > Talent // Illustration Age

A podcast of quick casual thoughts on finding your thing in the design and illustration world by illustrator and designer Andy J. Miller.

I found a new podcast! The blog is amazing in itself, plenty of inspiration for artist types, and I had been following for a little while, but I only just today realized there was a podcast too. Looks interesting and highly motivating.

And that’s it for this week. Have you read, watched, heard, or written an interesting thing this week? Has something on the internet made you think or feel strongly? If so, drop a link in the comments :)
