If We Were Having Coffee // Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone!

Hello and happy Valentine’s Day dear readers. I know, I know, it’s a fake and highly over commercialized holiday made up by the greeting card/jewelry company to squeeze a little more money out of us during the after Christmas slump, but still, I think we needed a holiday all about love and romance.

I’m a sucker for the cheesiness of it all, the hearts covering everything and the words “I Love You” written in bold pink and red letters. I love the intimate dinner dates and knowing that you are joining with couples all over the country in being cheesy and romantic too. Love is in the air today people, breathe it in!

If we were having coffee I would tell you that I couldn’t stay long since I have plans to spend the day with my lady. We aren’t doing anything super special today. We’ll be leaving soon to head to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, they have a new exhibit all about chocolate, which feels appropriate for the day. We’ll probably tour the rest of the museum too, it has always been one of our favorite place to go on days like this.

Tonight we are going to dinner at our new favorite seafood place. We are debating whether or not it is a good idea to have nothing but copious amounts of oysters and wine for dinner. We love oysters and spend more money than we should throughout the year eating them. They aren’t cheap when you live in a landlocked state in the middle of the country.

If we were having coffee I would tell you that so far I am really enjoying my long weekend. Friday night we went out to see a friend of ours perform in a play. It was a one-actor, three-act play about having tea with jack the ripper the night of his first kill. Yeah, it sounds a little disturbing, and it was, but oh my god was it good nd my friend did an amazing job!

We spent last night with my family, celebrating my sister’s birthday. She’s 27 years old now and complaining about being close to 30. I turn 31 this year so I have no sympathy. We had a really good time with everyone and my brother’s newly pregnant girlfriend was there too. We probably scared her off with our antics but I am hoping we’ll be seeing much more of her now.

If we were having coffee I would tell you that I am still moving right along with my reading challenge. I just finished Sense and Sensibility and I’ll be starting War of the Worlds tomorrow. I know I had written about not liking ebooks at all but I think I will read this one on my iPad. I had already started it on there last summer so I figure I can finish it there too. It will definitely take longer to get through though *sigh*

I am also moving right along with learning Spanish too. I am using Duolingo and doing, at least, two lessons every day. I seriously love this app and cannot recommend it enough. I tried learning Spanish when I was high school but quickly dropped the class. I was frustrated by how different the grammar and sentence structures were and I am still frustrated by it now, but I feel like it makes the writer in me think more about language and how people speak in a deeper way. It has been a very interesting endeavor.

If we were having coffee I would tell you that I expect this upcoming week to be a rather good one. I am only working three days out of the week due to the holiday and the fact that I took Thursday off. The weather will be gorgeous for at least the next 10 days. And I think I have found a way to start drawing again, for real this time.

I have become obsessed with tiny drawings. I think it is something I could do in 20 or 30 minutes a day and I already have a pack of tiny micron pens I haven’t even used yet. I plan to spend the week figuring out how I work in time for this every day. I love art just as much as I love writing and I have to find time for it soon because I just don’t feel like I am me anymore without it. It seems easier than it is though, between work, writing, reading, and learning coding and Spanish, there just isn’t a whole lot of little moments left in the day.

Here’s an example of the kind of drawing I am talking about:

If we were having coffee I would tell you that it well past time for me to get going. I am supposed to leave in half an hour and I have not done one thing to get ready for the day, besides drink two cups of coffee in the time it took me to tell you all of this.

I have very much enjoyed this chat and I would love if you let me know how you are doing too. I hope that your week was a good one. I hope the day will be lovely, whether you are taken, single, or involved in something more complicated, remember the day is about love and there is someone out there who does love you.

  1. Sounds like you have a pretty good day, and a good week lined up. You definitely sound cheerful, which is nice since there are so many people complaining about politics and the over-commercialization of Valentine’s Day. :) Hope you have a lovely week ahead!

    1. I am very cheerful! I know there is a lot of bitterness surrounding Valentine’s Day but instead of condemning the day I think we should take it back and make it all about love and romance. It shouldn’t be about expensive dates and shallow gestures, true love and intimacy, that is what it should be about!

Have a great week Diana :)

      1. I agree—I think that (much like with weddings, actually) people have built a concept of a bigger and more lavish celebration than is necessary to show someone that you care about them, and the stress of that leads to a lot of bitterness about the holiday.

  2. Wow, Lisa. That drawing of the owl was incredible. I wish I could draw like that.
When I was a kid, my babysitter taught me how to draw the back end of an elephant for a competition at school and I won a Mars Bar. That’s been the pinnacle of my artistic career to date.
I took my daughter to see Matilda The Musical in Sydney and we had a great day.
It’s been incredibly hot here and we’re having what could be reverse hibernation huddling by the air-conditioner!
Hope you have a great week!

    1. I wish I could too! Lol it isn’t mine but with practice I hope to be able to draw something like that some day. Your drawing of an elephant’s back side sound awesome lol

Matilda has been one of my favorite books since I was a little girl! I didn’t know there was a musical! I would love to see it.

I hope you have a great week too :)

      1. It’s interesting how different books do the rounds because I’m 46 and I hadn’t heard of Matilda until my kids were at school. I read “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory” but read mostly Enid Blyton and non-fiction. I still mainly read non-fiction.
Matilda the Musical is phenomenal and I know it’s played in Sydney, Broadway and London recently. Did you read my Matilda post? https://beyondtheflow.wordpress.com/2016/02/09/matilda-the-musical-if-youre-little-you-can-do-a-lot/
Hope you can manage to see it for yourself! xx Rowena
